New Orleans Police Department released a dramatic body camera video of an NOPD officer involved in a shootout with an armed robbery suspect.
NOPD Chief Shaun Ferguson reveals details that led to last Tuesday’s shooting between Officer Levi Atkin and the suspect, Daniel Castillo.
Ferguson says the officer was investigating an armed robbery in the 2500 block of St. Louis Street near the Lafitte Greenway.
The video shows Officer Atkin using his flashlight to search for the victim’s property in a nearby field, when the officer encountered Castillo hiding in the nearby bushes.
The officer demands Castillo show his hands, to which Ferguson says he refused to comply. Ferguson says Castillo then fired two shots at the officer before his gun jammed. The officer then returned 17 shots at Castillo.
Castillo was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital for treatment. Castillo was booked with one count of armed robbery, one attempted armed robbery, and one count of attempted murder of a police officer.
Officer Atkin is on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
