The Treasure Chest Casino opens its sportsbook Thursday, meaning all New Orleans area casinos will soon have sports betting. But what about mobile sports betting? It looks like you won’t be able to cast a bet from your couch until next year.
“There is no definitive date and things could always change but I know from speaking with the head of the Gaming Control Board that it is looking like that early 2022, closer to around the Superbowl,” Crowley State Representative John Stefanski told WWL.
Stefanski said mobile betting is a lot more complicated than placing a wager at a casino and a big part of the delay is coming from the technical challenges of geo-fencing. Nine parishes voted against legalized sports betting last year and the apps will have to be able to exclude residents in those parishes from participating before the service can go live statewide.
“That is some very, very complicated technology, especially when you talk about getting those lines right,” said Stefanski who added there are other hoops to jump through as well. “Working on suitability to make sure that all of the companies have the security measures and all of the things that come associated with that.”
Unfortunately, that means you won’t be able to bet on LSU from your couch while getting ready for the bowl game against Kansas State on January 4th or place mobile bets on who will win the College Football Playoff.
