If you've ever wanted a bridge, now's your chance. DOTD is giving away the four bridges that make up parts of HWY 90 that have been shut down for two years due to structural issues.

But, you may want to listen to the requirements first. Daniel Gitlin, Public Information Officer for the DOTD, says the opportunity is open to anyone, but it won’t be easy.

“It would have to be a person or organization interested in preserving he history of the bridges, they would have to explain as part of the application, their intent for public use of the bridge and how they plan on removal.”

In a unique move, the department is able to offer the bridges up for free, including the cost of removal. That was due to the bridges receiving a special designation.

“Once the bridges were deemed to have historical value, it opened the opportunity for the public to accept and maintain the historic structures.”

The free price tag also includes the department covering the cost of removal. Gitlin says this is really a unique opportunity to help the state move along the process of new development on the old road.

“This is a way to move on more quickly. Practically, it keeps DOTD from having to contract out to get the bridges removed.”
