Winds blows smoke smell over New Orleans Metro

Downtown New Orleans
WWL

"Ooh, that smell."

That Lynyrd Skynyrd song lyric perfectly describes the feelings of New Orleans-area residents as high winds blow smoke from the Bayou Sauvage marsh fire towards the city. That smoke brings with it a pungent smell that wafting over the region.

WWL-TV meteorologist Payton Malone says this morning's wind out of the northeast sent the worst of the smoke and the smell towards Chalmette and Algiers. Malone adds that this afternoon's winds could bring even more smoke over other parts of the city.

Authorities from St. Bernard Parish continue their efforts to put out the fire. In the meantime, residents in Chalmette and in New Orleans East who have breathing problems or who are sensitive to smoke will have to limit the amount of time they stay outdoors.
