Woman's armed severed, NOPD officers injured, in chainsaw incident

New Orleans Police say two officers suffered mild to moderate injuries responding to a gruesome incident in Filmore on Monday afternoon.

Police were dispatched around 2 p.m. to investigate an aggravated battery by cutting. Upon arriving on the scene in the 1200 block of Riviera Ave., officers came upon a 70-year-old woman whose arm had been severed.


Investigators believe the weapon used was a chainsaw.

Police apprehended 34-year-old John Pittman in the 3500 block of Franklin Ave.

An initial police report detailed how the officers were injured:

"Officers tried to engage with the suspect who resisted arrest, leading to a fall down the stairs with the suspect. The officers tased the suspect and additional officers arrived to apprehend the suspect. The suspect sustained multiple abrasions and lost a tooth. One Officer suffered multiple abrasions, neck, head, and right lower leg injuries. The second Officer was bitten on the left arm. All injured parties were taken to a local hospital for treatment."
