Worst crawfish fears coming to fruition

Before Christmas we were hearing dire predictions about how the weather had decimated the crawfish crop.

A month later, the season is indeed looking bleak.

Farmers are finding empty ponds.

"You go out to harvest your ponds, and there is NOTHING there," Louisiana Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain told WWL's Tommy Tucker. "They simply are not there."

Following a round of freezing weather on the heels of record drought and heat, it is a horrible crawfish season.

"You can expected higher prices and a limited supply," Strain explained. "We are in the crawfish season, but really don't have much availability."

Nearly all local seafood vendors report having NO crawfish or are selling small quantities of live mudbugs for more than eleven dollars a pound.

Strain says many are throwing in the towel and giving up on this season.

"Salvage what we can and move forward for next year."
