LSU faces off against Miami on Sunday night in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Women’s March Madness tournament, and one of the Tiger’s most famous fans looks to have wavering support.
The New Orleans native and hip-hop legend Lil Wayne appears to have doubled support for his hometown Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes after he was seen FaceTiming Miami’s Cavinder twins after their Sweet 16 win over Villanova.
LSU took down Utah on Friday night to advance to its matchup against the Hurricanes, and while he did take to social media to congratulate LSU star Angel Reese, some are questioning who he is supporting on Sunday night.
Hanna and Haley Cavinder are known for their massive social media following and high-profile NIL deals, so the rapper’s call could only be a show of support, as it is unknown what was said on the call.
Still, LSU’s coach Kim Mulkey was asked about his potentially wavering loyalty, but she maintained he is backing the Tigers to win on Sunday.
“Well, you understand I don’t know the connection to Miami other than it’s a pretty big rap scene here,” Mulkey said. “Maybe that’s what it is. I would think he’s from Louisiana. I don’t know him well enough to speak for him, but he’s from Louisiana, as far as I know. I don’t think that we have to worry about Lil Wayne.”
Reese also commented on the post from Hanna Cavinder, saying that she is “on him because he’s from NOLA, and he called them before he called us.”
“So, luckily, he did tweet it out last night. Hopefully, he comes to the game,” Reese told reporters.
Reese also touched on the support from athletes and celebrities and how it’s helped grow women’s basketball, saying it has been “amazing all year.”
“If you’ve seen all the different kinds of celebrities and NBA players and people that have reached out to us and showed that they were supportive,” Reese said. “I think Magic Johnson last night tweeted at me. Just being able to see that just makes me happy because I’m able to grow women’s basketball. So Lil Tunechi, you better come pull up tomorrow.”
The Tigers are set to face off against Miami at 6:10 p.m. CST on ESPN.
