A new poll has found that nearly a third of Americans think President Joe Biden has the “mental sharpness” to be an effective president.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll comes on the heels of President Biden’s reelection campaign announcement.

Of those surveyed, 32% said that they think Biden has the “mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president,” and another 33% think he’s “in good enough physical health” for the job.

Biden’s age has been a major point of concern for Republican and Democrat voters, as he would be 82 on his second inauguration day, being that he is elected.

During the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, held last weekend, the president even cracked a couple of jokes about his age, addressing that he is aware of the criticism.

“I believe in the First Amendment, not just because my good friend Jimmy Madison wrote it,” Biden said during the dinner.

One of his jokes also served as a slam to now-former CNN Anchor Don Lemon.

“You call me old. I call it being seasoned. You say I’m ancient. I say I’m wise. You say I’m over the hill. Don Lemon would say that’s a man in his prime,” he joked.

The poll not only looked at what Americans think of Biden but also the man expected to be his main challenger, former President Donald Trump.

Of those surveyed, 54% said they think Trump, who is about four years younger than Biden, has the “mental sharpness it takes to serve effectively as president.” Additionally, 64% think he is in good enough physical health for the job. For comparison, if Trump were to be elected in 2024, on his second inauguration day, he would be 78 years old.

When asked about how much they find the candidates “honest and trustworthy,” Biden (41%) beat out Trump (33%).

Still, not everyone is on board with a 2020 rematch in 2024, and the poll showed that 43% said they think both Biden and Trump are “too old for another term” as president. Additionally, 26% said “only Biden” was too old, compared to 1% who said only Trump was too old.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll was conducted from April 28 to May 3 and included responses from 1,006 U.S. adults. There is a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
