A ground worker lost their life at the San Antonio International Airport on Friday after they were “ingested into” a plane’s engine. The worker’s death has sparked an investigation by authorities.
The airport released a statement on the tragedy, noting that it is working with the authorities in their investigation as the National Transportation Safety Board works to gather information.
“An accident occurred on the ground at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) Friday night that resulted in the fatality of an airline ground crew member,” airport spokesperson Erin Rodriguez said in a statement.
The National Transportation Safety Board shared a statement with The Hill on Sunday evening, noting that the incident happened late last Friday.
“On Friday, June 23, Delta Flight 1111 had arrived at San Antonio International Airport from Los Angeles and was taxiing to the gate on one engine when a worker was ingested into that engine at about 10:25 p.m.,” the NTSB statement said.
Citing a source briefed on the situation, the Guardian reported that the worker appeared to have “intentionally stepped in front of the live engine” on the jet. However, authorities have yet to confirm this as the investigation remains ongoing.
“The NTSB has been in contact with Delta,” the federal agency’s statement added. “They are in the information gathering process at this point.”
The identity of the worker has not been released at this time.
The airport has said its “deeply saddened” by the death of the worker and that as it becomes available, more information will be shared.
Delta Air Lines also shared it was “heartbroken” over the worker’s death in a statement to CNN.
“We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio. Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” the statement said.
