SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS RADIO) – An executive with a San Francisco-based tech company has died following a stabbing in the Rincon Hill neighborhood.
Bob Lee, 43, was the founder of Cash App — a mobile payment service similar to Venmo and PayPal.
San Francisco police reported that the stabbing occurred just after 2 a.m. on Tuesday on Main Street, a part of the city surrounded by high rises and commercial buildings just a few blocks from the Bay Bridge. Officers who responded to the scene found a man suffering from a stab wound.
Lee was currently the Chief Product Officer at the San Francisco-based crypto currency startup MobileCoin and was formerly Chief Technology Officer of Square. He was a Bay Area native from Mill Valley in Marin County.
Police did not release Lee's name, but MobileCoin founder Joshua Goldbard confirmed his death in a series of tweets. He called Lee an incredible human, saying he was like a brother who had so much deep heartfelt love.
"He was the quintessential creator, leader, and consummate hacker. From large contributions to Android at Google, to being the first CTO of Square, in that time creating CashApp, and working with us here at Mobilecoin, Bob surely had an impact that will last far beyond his short time on earth," MobileCoin wrote in a statement. "This may sound impressive, but Bob's real resume is the hearts and minds he touched in his time here."
No arrest has been made and San Francisco police have not released any details on possible suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD.
