A member of former President Donald Trump's administration is in critical condition after he was shot during a carjacking spree in Washington. D.C.
Mike Gill, who worked at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission during the Trump administration, was attacked on Monday evening, according to multiple reports.
The suspect allegedly entered Gill's car around 5:45 p.m. as it was parked on the side of a street, shot him and dashed off. Gill was taken to the hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries. His current condition is unknown.
Just after 7 p.m. and less than a half-mile away, the same gunman attempted to carjack someone else, but the driver got away and called police.
Ten minutes later, the gunman approached a man and a woman by their car and demanded the keys. The suspect shot the man and then took off in the couple's car, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The victim, 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez Jr., was taken to the hospital where he died.
The suspect then drove about 20 miles southeast to Prince George's County, Maryland, where police say he committed two additional carjackings. At about 3 a.m., while driving a carjacked vehicle on I-295, the suspect began shooting at a police cruiser. A round struck the cruiser but the officer was not injured.
Around 4:35 a.m., police officers in New Carrollton found a disabled SUV in the road that had been reported as a carjacked vehicle in another jurisdiction within Prince George's County. As they were searching the area, the suspect approached them while displaying two handguns, according to the
Maryland Office of the Attorney General.
Two officers fired at the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham of Suitland, Maryland. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras; if the incident was caught on video, the Attorney General's Office said it would release the footage within 20 business days.
Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the crime spree. Reports indicate Cunningham may have been suffering from a mental health crisis.
