ANN ARBOR (WWJ) — A Michigan man is going viral for attending a virtual court hearing in Washtenaw County regarding his suspended license while driving.

In a case that has garnered international attention online, Corey Harris was scheduled for a hearing in Ann Arbor on May 15 in a case that involved driving on a suspended license.

Footage from the Zoom hearing shows Judge Cedric Simpson bewildered as Harris joins the call, wearing a seatbelt and sitting in the driver’s seat of a car.

Simpson asks “Mr. Harris, are you driving?” and Harris responds that he is “pulling into my doctor’s office, actually, so just give me one second.”

“Wait,” Simpson said with a wry smile as he dropped his pen and rested his head on his hand. “What are we doing?”

Public defender Natalie Tate replied she was requesting for the case to be adjourned for up to four weeks.

“Ok. So maybe I don’t understand something. This is a driving while license suspended [case]? And he was just driving. And… he didn’t have a license,” Simpson said.

“That is what the charge is, your honor,” Tate replied.

“No, I’m looking at his record — he doesn’t have a license. He’s suspended and he’s just driving,” Simpson said.

After a long pause, Simpson said “I don’t even know why he would do that. So, defendant’s bond is revoked in this matter and defendant is to turn himself into the Washtenaw County Jail by 6 p.m. today. Failure to turn himself in will result in a bench warrant with no bond.”

“Oh my God,” Harris said as he rolled his head back, realizing what he had done.
