In one of the most high-profile murder cases in years, Alex Murdaugh was convicted last month in the 2021 slayings of his wife Maggie and son Paul.

Subsequently, Murdaugh was sentenced to two life sentences.

Now more is known about Murdaugh’s fate after the completion of his reception and evaluation process Friday at the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

The institution’s Protective Custody Review Board recommended Murdaugh be placed in statewide protective custody.

“Inmates in this unit have validated protective concerns and are placed in a specialized unit to separate them from the general population,” the board said in a statement. “Their location is not disclosed for safety and security reasons.”

Currently, 28 inmates reside in the state’s protective custody unit.

Security, mental health and classification experts were all part of the board that conducted the evaluation.
