The current sriracha shortage is causing prices to skyrocket.
A 28-ounce bottle which usually retails for about $5 is currently listed on eBay for a minimum of $20, with several listings asking for upwards of $100. One listing for a 136-ounce tub is selling for over $200 -- that's about $1.50 per ounce.
Huy Fong Foods, the California-based manufacturer of the popular condiment, has been suffering from a chili pepper shortage since July 2020. The lack of peppers creates a lack of sriracha. Since then, the situation has only gotten worse.
In April, the company announced it was experiencing an "unprecedented inventory shortage" due to drought conditions in Mexico damaging jalapeño crops.
In addition to Sriracha, other products impacted by the shortage include Huy Fong's Chili Garlic Sauce and Sambal Oelek chili paste.
Last year, Huy Fong Foods had similar issues with low supply and even suspended sales over the summer due to a chili pepper shortage.
As for how long this shortage is expected to last, Dr. Guillermo Murray, a scientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, told LA's Morning News it could be months before we start to see the beloved sauce.
"If everything goes as expected, we might start seeing Sriracha back on the shelves next year, early next year," he said.
