There won't be many happy campers when they learn about this product recall.
Westfield Outdoor, Inc. recalled three types of Cabela's tents due to a dangerous possibility where the stove jack ring could deteriorate after being exposed to hot temperatures from the stove pipe, creating smoke inside of the tent and a major injury risk to people if they inhale it, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on Thursday.
The products in question are the Cabela’s Ultimate Alaknak Outfitter, the Instinct Outfitter and the Big Horn 6P that were all supplied by Westfield Outdoor and sold at Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops around the country and online from August 2019 to November 2020.
There were about 5,050 units recalled in the United States, plus another 830 units recalled in Canada.
The tents came in different sizes, ranging from "10 feet by 10 feet to 13 feet by 27 feet and are sold in green," the CPSC noted. They were priced between $900 and $1,500.
In total, there were six different tents recalled.
Concerned campers can check out the tent's model number on the sewn-in warning label that's on the inside of the tent, and look at the CPSC notice to see if your tent is involved in the recall.
The CPSC advised people to stop using a wood stove inside of their tent and reach out to Westfield Outdoor for a free replacement stove jack ring. The recall notice also said that Westfield Outdoor is contacting all those who they know have purchased one of these tents.
"Westfield has received three reports of the stove jack ring deteriorating due to heat and creating smoke, and one report of smoke inhalation and frostbite related to discontinuing the use of a wood stove while camping," the CPSC said.
