Since at least the 2020 election, myths about voter fraud not only contributed to the Capitol riot, but to overall confusion about U.S. elections.
As we head towards the midterms, it seems that some voters may dispute election results if their preferred candidate loses, regardless of evidence. In certain areas, it even appears that election integrity is on the ballot.
“You just have all these different rules... the confusion really is the issue,” said KYW News reporter Jim Melwert. “And, you know, that confusion opens doors for litigation and then that just erodes the confidence in elections. And when you get there, that’s a really dangerous place to go.”
Melwert joined “The Homestretch” from Pennsylvania to explain how the issue is playing out there on the latest episode of Audacy’s limited-series elections podcast. Amber McReynolds – an election administration expert serving on the board of governors of the U.S. Postal Service – also joined the show to us get a national view of the issue.
“We have to reject these conspiracy theorists and election deniers that, you know, don’t want your vote to count,” she said.
