Tropical Storm Nicholas is strengthening off the lower Texas coast this morning with experts saying it may become a category one hurricane with wind close to 80 mph at landfall late Monday night.

If Nicholas's track stays the same, all of the heavy rain will stay south of a College Station to Lufkin line in Texas. The storm will generate some scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms today and tomorrow.

A change in its track farther west would give the area much more rain, but as of now, meteorologists say they don't see this happening.

Now areas well to the southeast of DFW will see very heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions over the next 48 hours. It's not out of the question that residents across the mid and upper Texas coast and 100 miles inland will see upwards of 8 to 10" of rain over the next couple of days. If Nicholas slows down, rainfall totals could be much higher, but meteorologists caution they do not see this happening at this time.

The remnants of Nicholas will be in Louisiana by Wednesday afternoon which is still recovering slowly from the massive storm that was Ida.
