Another poll indicates that former President Donald Trump currently has the upper hand over current President Joe Biden in the early stages of campaigning for the 2024 election.
The Wall Street Journal poll of 1,500 registered voters conducted from Nov. 29 through Dec. 4 found that Biden lags behind Trump by four percentage points (47% to 43%) on a hypothetical ballot with only those two candidates. So far, Trump has been far in the lead ahead of the other potential GOP candidates and just two other Democrats have decided to run – Marianne Williamson and Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota – according to The New York Times.
“Trump’s lead expands to 6 points, 37% to 31%, when five potential third-party and independent candidates are added to the mix,” said the Wall Street Journal. “They take a combined 17% support, with Democrat-turned-independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. drawing the most, at 8%.”
Trump and Biden faced off in the 2020 presidential election after Trump had a four-year term in the Oval Office. Since the 2020 campaign trail, Trump has been making unfounded claims that election interference cost him the election.
This week, another poll from CNN found that Biden’s approval rating had slipped to its lowest at any time during his presidency at 37%. That matches a low Gallup also recorded last month. CNN’s poll results found that most Americans don’t approve of the way the president has handled the economy as high inflation and high interest rates continue to impact consumers.
Trump leading Biden at the polls isn’t a new phenomenon. Last month, Audacy reported on a Yahoo News/YouGov poll that found Trump was pulling ahead of Biden at 44% compared to 42%. Those results were gathered from a survey of 1,584 adults.
However, another piece of data from this week seems to contradict the idea that Americans want Trump to have another term in office. According to a poll by NewsNation/Decision Desk HQ, 57% support disqualifying the 2024 Republican presidential primary frontrunner if he is convicted in one of four criminal cases brought against him this year.
While Biden’s legal troubles don’t come close to the mountain of charges against Trump, his son Hunter was indicted for the second time this week. Additionally, voters have questioned whether both Biden, 81, and Trump, 77, are too old for another term in office.
During a meeting with Democratic donors Tuesday, Biden even said himself that he probably wouldn’t be seeking another term if Trump wasn’t running again.
