Another session of the state legislature begins this evening, this one called by the lawmakers themselves -- and sparks may fly.

"This could be a tremendously messy session," said political analyst and publisher of lapolitics.com Jeremy Alford.

Alford says while some of the discussion will be about Hurricane Laura relief and the unemployment trust fund,  the main event will the legislature versus the executive branch.

Alford says a lot of conservative lawmakers are still angry at Governor John Bel Edwards' restrictions ordered for the pandemic, and are spoiling for a fight that has constitutional implications.

"This debate and this session is going to be about science versus emotions and in some respect, medicine versus business," said Alford, who notes that "conservative lawmakers, many of them...want to overturn the governor's executive orders."

Alford says any move by lawmakers to take power from the governor and put it in the legislative branch will likely end up in court.
