Early voting for the October 14 primary election ends tomorrow, and it looks like turnout among Louisianans is down 9 percent compared to 2019.
Pollster John Couvillon with JMC Analytics says the number of Louisianans who cast a ballot Saturday through Thursday is down by 22,000.
“231,082 votes, which, when you compared to the primary in 2019, 253,197 had early voted,” said Couvillon.
Typically, turnout for a gubernatorial election is around 45 to 50 percent according to the Secretary of State’s office. Based on the numbers for early voting, Couvillon expects interest among registered voters to remain low on Election Day.
“I think overall turnout will be in the upper 30s, like around 38 percent, as opposed to the 40 that I’ve been saying,.” he said.
Statewide mail-in early voting is up 104 percent, but in-person voting is down 24 percent. Couvillon points out that Republican turnout for early voting is up compared to the same time four years ago.
“Republicans are up 46 to 40, whereas back in 2019, after a similar period of time, it was 43-42 Democratic,” Couvillon said.
