Tommy: How are you coping with a stressful 2020?

As most of you know, I’m recovering from my second knee replacement. Things are going well, and I’m very happy with the progress I’m making. It isn’t just happening, though. I’m working my you-know-what off with physical therapy and exercise to get back to normal.

One positive that has come from that is rather than listen to music I’ve been using rehab time to do free thinking. Not forced "I’ve GOT to come up with something" thinking, but just letting my mind meander along the neuron backroads of my mind and pull over when I spot something different and interesting. I’ve made a lot of stops.

To say it has been a tough 2020 is a gross understatement. We’ve been hit with polarizing partisanship in government, social unrest and calls for long needed structural change in the streets, a bizarre presidential race unlike any we’ve seen before and a pandemic which resulted in a senseless contest between politics and science.

But wait! There’s more.

If you act right now, our area can be included in the cone of uncertainty SIX times and counting during the ongoing hurricane season. In reality you don’t have to do anything because it's already happened. I’m beginning to wonder if stress is as dangerous as the experts say because if it was few of us would be alive.

How have YOU coped with the stress of 2020? I’d appreciate it if you’d shoot me a quick e-mail to tommy@wwl.com and share some mechanisms that you’ve used to get through these tough times. You share them with me, and I’ll share them with the audience. Who knows? One quick email could make a long term change in someone else’s life.

Meanwhile, listen to what Michelle Moore, a Clinical Psychologist and Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine to say as we talked about coping and stress.
