I remember when I first learned about the atom in school and how fascinated I was that there could be this entire tiny world happening all around us that was invisible but yet made our world possible. We only learned of it due to the hard and diligent work of dedicated scientists.
I think that’s a valid analogy as it relates to the world of intelligence and counterintelligence. It exists all around us; but few, save those practiced in the art of the tradecraft involved, are aware of its existence. And, much like the atoms that hold us all together, it is a crucial, fundamental part of our existence as a nation.
But what’s it really like, and how real are shows like “Homeland” or “The Americans”? We took a deep dive into the sub surface world of intelligence as we discussed SIGINT, HUMINT and IMINT with James Olson. James knows what he’s talking about. He is currently a Professor of Practice at the Bush School of Government of Texas A&M. He’s also the FORMER CHIEF OF COUNTERINTELLIGENCE AT THE CIA and has 31 YEARS of experience doing espionage and covert action work undercover work for the CIA.
What he had to say is well worth the listen, especially when he shares a real time threat made to his family while on a mission in another country. Please enjoy and Happy New Year!
