Tropical Storm Fred develops south of Puerto Rico, takes aim at Florida

The National Hurricane Center has confirmed that Tropical Storm Fred has developed south of Puerto Rico and is making its way towards Haiti and the Dominican Republic, bringing heavy rains that could cause mudslides and floods.

Fred is the sixth tropical storm to develop in the Atlantic during the 2021 hurricane season.

“The most important thing today is preparation,” Puerto Rico Gov. Pedro Pierluisi told USA Today. “I am not going to minimize the potential impact of this event … we expect a lot of rain.”

Tropical storm warnings are in effect for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It remains too early to forecast where Fred might head from there as it approaches the U.S. mainland.

Florida is in its sights.

As it forms, Weather Channel experts warned people to prepare for the worst.
