The National Hurricane Center says by Friday we could have a tropical depression or tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico.
"A trough of low pressure continues to produce a large area of disorganized cloudiness and showers over the Bay of Campeche," according to the Tropical Weather Outlook.
Forecasters say any development will be slow over the next several days and little movement is expected.
"A tropical depression could form in this area late in the week. Regardless of development, heavy rainfall will be possible over portions of Central America and southern Mexico during the next several days."
WWL TV Meteorologist Michelle Morgan says, "Models are showing a very slow development through the week. This is still to far out to talk about specifics but if the models hold true, a weak tropical system or an area low pressure may move northward closer to the end of this week. If any of those scenarios play out, we're looking at heavy rain somewhere along the Gulf Coast by the end of the week or this weekend."
Will it eventually had for Louisiana?
"A system hasn't formed yet so it's too early to put out an official forecast."
The Hurricane Center says the chance of depression formation through Monday is low at 10 percent. Conditions improve for development later in the week.
"Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent."
