Fred forecast to regain tropical storm strength, landfall possible between New Orleans, Pensacola

Fred, now a remnant low, is drifting west-northwest into the Gulf of Mexico, but the National Hurricane Center believes it will reorganize into a tropical storm before steering more to the north. The new forecast cone predicts landfall some time Monday between New Orleans and Pensacola.

"The global models are now in better agreement that the upper-level trough over the eastern Gulf of Mexico that has been hindering the development of Fred will move northward and weaken," said Senior Hurricane Specialist Jack Beven.

"They also indicate that Fred is likely to re-form a well-defined closed circulation over the eastern Gulf of Mexico Sunday morning," he said.

The hurricane center may post a tropical storm watch for the northern Gulf Coast tonight, with warnings likely starting tomorrow.
