How much rain could Louisiana see from the Gulf system?

Rainfall

The National Weather Service is warning of possible flooding rains as we wait to see if a low pressure system in the Gulf of Mexico develops.

"Totals of 4-10 inches with higher amounts possible in some locations," forecasters predict. "The majority of these amounts should be Friday through Sunday."

Exactly where those inundating showers develop depends on the path of what could be a tropical depression or tropical storm in the Gulf by Friday.

"These amounts could cause widespread flooding as well as rises on area rivers to flood stage or higher," the Weather Service advises.

The National Hurricane Center says that is a 70% chance of development in the next 48 hours, and an 90% chance in the next 5 days as the system begins to move northward.

"Regardless of development, this system is expected to bring the threat of very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and strong winds to southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi."

Coastal residents could also see water blown ashore.

"Tidal rises of 1 to 3 feet may also cause areas outside levees to experience coastal flooding issues starting Friday and lingering through the weekend."
