Hurricane Sam got stronger Sunday

Tropics

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Sam got stronger Sunday.

"Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 150 mph with higher gusts.  Sam is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale," the NHC advised.

The hurricane is over the central Atlantic Ocean.

"Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next couple of days.  Thereafter, some slow weakening is forecast."

Sam is currently not a threat to any land.

It is not expected to impact the United States.

Sam is the 18th named storm of the season and the fourth to form in just a week.

This is the second earliest in the season that the storm that starts with an S has formed.  Last year was the fastest on record.
