Tropical development still unlikely, but could mean rain next week

Tropics

The surface trough over the Yucatan Peninsula does still not have any increased potential for development. The disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with it are forecast to move northward out over the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

"The system is forecast to move northwestward over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico later today, then move slowly northward or northeastward over the western or central Gulf of Mexico," said Richard Pasch with the National Hurricane Center.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards it's a reminder that we are not done with hurricane season.

"If it's not this storm system, there certainly could be another at some point in the future," said Edwards. "In the neighborhood of about 368 days, we've had five hurricane make landfall in Louisiana. Four of those were last year. While we don't want anymore, I don't think we get a vote."

Fortunately for the entire Gulf coast, the hurricane center thinks tropical cyclone development is a long shot.

"Upper-level winds are only expected to be marginally conducive for tropical cyclone formation, but some slow development is possible while the system moves across the Gulf of Mexico through the middle of the week," said Pasch.
