After a mostly quiet couple of months, the tropics blew up with multiple named systems, and it is likely to stay busy.
Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf, Caribbean, and Atlantic are extremely warm -- the Atlantic set a record last month. National Hurricane Center Forecaster Daniel Brown says tropical activity is heating up now, too.
"We certainly are heading into the time of year in which we really have to start looking just about anywhere in the basin for formations," Brown cautions.
Brown says some wind shear helped recent storms like Gert and Emily didn't strengthen much, but with sea temperatures as high as they are, storms will form nonetheless.
"With the El Nino ongoing, it's possible we'll have some shear but it probably won't suppress the formation of additional storms," said Brown.
