Weather service to determine if tornado hit Tangipahoa Parish

The National Weather Service is investigating damage in Tangipahoa Parish from storms Tuesday night that reportedly produced a tornado.

"Parish officials passed on multiple reports of a possible tornado between LA 1045 and 1046 just west of Amite," NWS posted.


Trees toppled in many parts of the parish; blocking roads, highways and the interstate.

"Trees down and blocking both northbound and southbound lanes of I-55 at Amite. Possible tornado," the weather service said. "Widespread trees down across the parish... Multiple trees down around Kentwood."

Other damage reports included power outages.  More than 10,000 customers lost electricity across the region.

They system brought high winds to much of Southeast Louisiana.

"Lakefront Airport recorded a wind gust of 60 mph."

There were also reports of sheds, awnings and roofs damaged in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parish.
