SKOKIE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A north suburban jewelry store that got its start in Chicago more than a hundred years ago is closing.

Sandberg Jewelers opened in Chicago in 1919 on Milwaukee Avenue. It moved to Irving Park in the 1950's, and eventually settled in its current location in Skokie.

Susan Sandberg is a third generation owner. She's retiring and closing the store permanently.

"It’s sad in a lot of ways, but the time is right for us to do this." She said the pandemic played a role in the decision as did the changing times.

To thank the community for its support, Sandberg is offering discounts of up to 70 % starting Friday.

"I want people to be able to come in and share and have a piece of Sandberg jewelers."

As for the official closing date, Sandberg said that will likely happen after the holidays.
