(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The latest COVID-19 numbers from the State of Illinois show the virus continues to spread, which has led health officials to renew their calls for people to get vaccines and boosters, as well as take other steps to protect themselves and others.

Officials with the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported more than 26,000 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19, including 123 deaths since Aug. 5.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 90 Illinois counties are at high or medium community level for COVID-19.

As of Thursday night, officials said more than 1,450 people in the state were reported to be hospitalized with the virus.

Health officials urged everyone to wear a well-fitting mask indoors.

In a press release, the IDPH said vaccination is the key to ending this pandemic.
