CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- On the Northwest Side, all eyes are on the 20th district state senate race, which has boiled down to who's the most progressive.
Incumbent Natalie Toro was appointed in the summer after Cristina Pacione-Zayas resigned to join Mayor Brandon Johnson’s administration.
Toro is a kindergarten teacher, but the Chicago Teachers Union decided to back rival Graciela Guzman, a CTU organizer. She also recently got an endorsement from Senator Bernie Sanders.
Guzman's campaign has said Toro is too conservative for the district, partly because of her ties to 33rd Ward committeeperson Iris Martinez, who backed Paul Vallas in last year's Chicago mayoral runoff against Johnson while Toro has defended her progressiveness.
Toro's campaign is outspending Guzman, $2 million to half a million. Also running are community organizer Geary Yonker and physician and farmer Dave Nayak.
