CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Illinois State Board of Education has put 21 school districts on probation for violating the state’s mask mandate, which was lambasted during a Wednesday morning meeting of the state board of education.

The districts are scattered around the state none in the Chicago area.

The State Board of Education said each has the opportunity to submit a corrective action plan. And if they don't, they'll lose recognition status, which means loss of funding and no participation in Illinois High School Association or Illinois Elementary School Association sports.

Board members heard from a number of people about the mask mandate, including school officials, state lawmakers and parents.

"You need accountability. And this isn't just about masks. This is about our government and the bureaucratic class running wild, circumventing the law, crushing the wills of the people and it needs to stop. We have laws for a reason. Free people are never ruled by fear. Thank you for your time," one person said during the board meeting.

A lawsuit challenging Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s authority was filed earlier this month in Clinton County.
