CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – The Chicago Architecture Center on Sunday morning welcomed back families to its space downtown for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic began.

For the third annual Girls Build! event, 300 students and their families constructed skyscrapers out of material from old models as part of a discussion about recycling.

Angela Esposito, the center’s director of education, said students can get inspired from the architecture surrounding the center at Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River designed by Jeanne Gang, Carol Ross Barney and Natalie Dubois.

The center teaches students from the Chicago Public Schools, the suburbs and – thanks to virtual programming – as far away as Dubai about construction, engineering and design.

The program is designed to encourage girls to consider futures in the industry.

Esposito said the architecture center reaches 35,000 students through summer camps, competitions, field trips and virtual programs throughout the year.
