(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Five of the nine candidates running for mayor of Chicago made their cases during a gathering of West Side ministers on Tuesday.
Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson was the first challenger to speak at the Columbus Park forum hosted by the Leaders Network.
He said city government is not doing right by the everyday working people of Chicago.
Later, Mayor Lori Lightfoot said Johnson wants to raise taxes by $800 million on people making more than $100,000 annually. That would include more than 30 percent of teachers as well as police and firefighters, she said.
All five of the candidates who appeared at the forum – including U.S. Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, Ald. Sophia King and businessman Willie Wilson -- also discussed issues such as crime and equity.
The five hopefuls did not appear at the same time but still managed to take digs at each other.
King, for example, said minority businesses are getting fewer city contracts under Lightfoot.
For her part, Lightfoot talked about empty and sometimes dangerous proposals from those trying to unseat her. Be wary, she said.
