8 people receive wrong second dose of COVID vaccine at Aurora Mariano's

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- It appears there was a COVID-19 vaccine mix-up at a west suburban grocery store this week, and some people got the wrong version of the second dose.

A spokeswoman for Mariano's said eight people, who were supposed to receive their second dose of the Moderna vaccine, were accidentally given the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster shot instead. The incident happened Tuesday at a Mariano's in west suburban Aurora.

According to the Tribune, Mariano's contacted all those impacted by the mix up, thanked them for their understand and apologized for their inconvenience.

“No adverse events for the affected patients have been reported,” said Amanda Puck, Mariano’s director of strategic brand development.

Mariano's has also reported the incident to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the CDC, the two vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer) are not interchangeable, and both doses are supposed to come from the same manufacturer. However, the CDC also said that in “exceptional situations” when the first dose can’t be provided or the product isn’t available, any available mRNA COVID-19 vaccine can be used to complete the series; and, if two different vaccines are inadvertently administered, “no additional doses of either product are recommended at this time."

An Aurora man, who was one of the eight impacted by the mix up, spoke to the Tribune and said although it was an accident and miscommunication, he felt frustrated and “like a guinea pig."

He encourages everyone to double-check to make sure they are receiving the proper second dose of the vaccine.
