CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The first ice skaters took to the ice at Millennium Park as the ice rink officially opened for the holiday season.

“It’s always a great experience here,” said Gio Hollingsworth, a Chicago native.

Hollingsworth stood out among the other skaters as he gracefully glided on the ice. While he raced around the rink, he constantly stopped to help fellow skaters as they fell.

“You will fall, but just be confident,” said Hollingsworth, “Just try, confidence is key.”

Hollingsworth began skating 14 years ago with the help of his godmother. At first, he opposed the idea. He despised the cold and did not enjoy the thought of skating around in the freezing climate, but he soon found a love for the ice.

“It’s a good stress relief and it’s a fun activity to do in the winter,” said Hollingsworth, “I love it.”

He now teaches youth hockey programs with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The ice skating rink is open now through March. Admission is free but online tickets are required.
