(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Activists are helping to lighten the burden on the city and social service agencies assisting some of the estimated 8,000 migrants who have been sent here from Texas, some ending up using police stations as shelters.

The 3rd District police station, 71st and Cottage Grove, has about a dozen migrants camped in the entrance.

Pete Keller and an organization called ULON, is helping with food, toiletries and clothing. He says people sending the migrants from the border give them a rosier impression of what awaits them on the other end, such as “imaginary apartments.”

“They’re in an entryway, in a foyer. Not even in the actual police station. And there’s kids,” Keller said.

His group plans to take in some asylum-seekers at the ULON Resource Center nearby. The organization welcomes any help.
