CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO)- Yet another Chicago City Council member is calling it quits.
Southeast Side Alderman Susan Sadlowski Garza announced on Monday that she will not be seeking a third term.
“After 31 years of working tirelessly for this ward, it's time for me to take a step back and take care of my family and myself. This has been one of the greatest achievements of my life and also one of the hardest. I will always hold this experience and the 10th Ward in my heart but it is time for me to move onto the next chapter of my life,” Garza wrote in a Facebook post.
Garza was the first member of the Chicago Teachers Union to ever be elected into city council and, beginning in 2019, served as chair of the city council’s labor committee. She has served the 10th Ward as alderman since 2015.
Garza’s announcement continues the growing exodus at city hall. Just in past two weeks, Wrigleyville Ald. Tom Tunney and South Side Ald. Leslie Hairston announced their upcoming retirement from city council. Lincoln Park Ald. Michel Smith resigned last month. And, Uptown Ald. James Cappleman, and Edgewater an Andersonville Ald. Harry Osterman have both announced they will be retiring at the end of their term in May of 2023.
On Monday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot praised Garza with a Twitter tribute.
“Sue’s advocacy ini City Council will be missed but I am confident that we will continue to hear from her and see her on the front lines fighting for social justice for years to come,” Lightfoot wrote.
