CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Someone has been spreading rat poison at locations on Chicago's Far North Side, and the local alderwoman said she’s concerned about the impact it could have on pets, wildlife and small children.

Ald. Maria Hadden (49th) said it’s been going on for at least a couple weeks. Known locations are alleys near Ashland and Fargo Avenues, as well as near Sheridan Road and Farwell Avenue. The alderwoman shared a message with her constituents on social media to address the issue.

“If you have a pet and you walk in the areas, again around Ashland and Fargo or Sheridan and Farwell … just be extra careful,” Hadden said. “Watch your pets. You might see green, granular packets, things like that.”

She said that description matches the photos that residents have sent her office, and Hadden encouraged anyone who sees more rat poison in the area to alert her team. Hadden said they are working to identify and stop the person responsible.

“It is, of course, creating a hazard for both our local wildlife and our local pets,” she said.

She said the city is not doing this, nor are nearby buildings or business owners.
