CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Downtown Alderman Brendan Reilly is unhappy with the settlement of complaints against a Gold Coast hotel accused of allowing big, noisy parties and worse.
Ken Meyer, Chicago’s Acting Commissioner of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection, said his teams cited the Eurostars Magnificent Mile Hotel for numerous violations after many complaints from guests and neighbors.
"There's just too many parties in private rooms, they're allowing way too many guests in the rooms, there's a lot of concerns and complaints about - just noise complaints going on at all hours," he said.
Threatened with suspension or revocation of the hotel license, the management agreed to measures like a ban on large, crowded parties, no paying for rooms with cash, making guests pledge not to have guns, and a promise of more security.
Alderman Brendan Reilly, 42nd Ward, called the so-called "nuisance abatement plan" a “weak slap on the wrist” considering how many problems the hotel has caused. He told the Sun-Times the $10,000 fine and allowing the hotel to keep operating are an insult.
He would have preferred a lengthy license suspension or revocation "to send the message that irresponsible hotel license holders will be held accountable and penalties will be stiff. It’s a disappointing outcome and I’m as disappointed as my constituents are.”
