CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some Chicago aldermen continue to urge the city to decide whether block parties can be held this summer and to start issuing permits if they'll be allowed.
Among them is Alderman Tom Tunney of the 44th Ward on the North Side who said he can't understand why the city is waiting so long to act on block parties.
"Larger events, they've established some protocol. They've been obviously working with businesses about how to bring back customers in a safe way. But near and dear to our neighborhoods is bringing back block parties," Tunney told WBBM Newsradio.
Tunney said he expects block parties will happen regardless of what the city does. He says the city should have already begun to provide guidance to block party organizers to help them keep the event safe.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot's office recently announced it will decide when and if block parties can be held safely this summer, based on guidance from the city's health department.
