(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A plan to improve one of the busiest bus routes in Chicago has apparently piqued the interest of Mayor Johnson and seems to have the approval of some frequent riders.

“Sign me up today, sign me up. Let's go.”

That was one of several reactions from riders here in Ravenswood about the potential for rapid bus service on Western Avenue, Chicago’s longest continuous street, in the form of a dedicated lane for CTA buses.

Alderman Matt Martin (47th) and Andre Vasquez (40th), along with more than a dozen others have penned a letter to Mayor Johnson and CTA leaders to study the possible impacts in the bustling area.

Waiting for her ride, Kim says it seems like a no brainer.

“I know the CTA has talked about doing it in other parts of the city and it hasn't really happened. I don't know, anything that makes public transit in Chicago stronger is something that realistically should get done. And this is a perfect area for that improvement.”

At the Leland and Western stop, WBBM asked rider Daniel about the idea.

“I feel like Western is busy all hours of the day. A 10-minute ride becomes more like a 20, 25-minute trip. So if this can speed things up, I absolutely support it.”

But he and several others said that even if Mayor Johnson is intrigued by the proposal, they’ll believe CTA improvements when, or if, they see them.
