(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A Chicago alderwoman is preparing to formally propose banning natural gas for new construction and major building renovations – an idea the Citizens Utility Board endorses.
Ald. Maria Hadden, 49th, will be proposing the Clean And Affordable Buildings Ordinance, which aims to eliminate harmful emissions in all new buildings and in buildings undergoing major additions of more than 10,000 square feet.
Jim Chilsen of the Citizens Utility Board says the proposal makes sense.
“There are a lot of good reasons for this ordinance, but CUB focuses on affordability, and all the studies that we have seen show that this is the most affordable way to go. Again, it’s going to be a transition. It’s going to be a long-term transition.”
He adds many studies show alternatives to natural gas are cleaner.
The American Gas Association, meanwhile, says natural gas bans can make housing more expensive and that all-electric homes require expensive retrofits.
