(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Alexi Giannoulias declared victory over his Republican opponent State Rep. Dan Brady in the race for Illinois Secretary of State.

With 43% of the vote tallied, Giannoulias was leading Brady by over 20 points.

Giannoulias will replace longtime Secretary of State Jesse White, who took office in 1999.

Giannoulias previously pledged to bring in ethics reforms and make the secretary of state’s office more efficient with digital licenses and other changes.

"We have to bring trust and integrity back to Springfield," he said Tuesday night.

He also stated the he wanted to restrict other states’ access to license plate data in Illinois so that women who come here for abortions can’t be tracked.

Brady had previously stated that he wanted to lower wait-times at driver’s license facilities, upgrade technology and foster partnerships with community colleges.

When it comes to policy issues such as abortion, Brady has stated that he believes the secretary of state's office should stay out of it.
