CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago drivers who have been plagued by traffic on the Kennedy and Edens Expressways finally got some good news on Sunday: All inbound lanes, including ramps, were fully reopened.
The reopening came after nine months of construction, which led to multiple lane closures from the Edens Expressway junction to Ohio Street. That construction marked the first phase of a three-year construction project, which is set to resume in spring 2024.
Illinois Department of Transportation spokesperson Maria Castaneda told CBS 2 that drivers can expect a “smoother ride” in more ways than one.
“You’ll have those additional lanes during those main, peak hours — obviously the two going in in the morning, as well as the two going out in the evening — but you’re also going to have a smoother ride on the roadway itself,” said Castaneda.
The entire project is expected to be completed in December 2025.
