CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Amazon said safety measures are in place at its facilities in the Chicago area to minimize loss of life in the event of a tornado here, following the deaths of six people in downstate Edwardsville over the weekend.

Amazon has warehouses in Markham, Matteson and University Park, and the company said emergency response training, such as for a severe weather event, is part of employment and there are regular drills.

If there’s a tornado warning, employees are instructed to shelter in place. If it falls short of a warning, supervisors follow the guidance of local authorities.

The Daily Southtown reported Amazon’s 3.8-million-square-foot building in Matteson is designed to withstand winds of at least 110 mph.

Ernest Roberts III, an engineer and the village’s director of community development, said the design goes “above and beyond what was called for” in building codes.
