(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Muslim girls can now have an American Girl doll that looks like them, thanks in part to an Elk Grove Village mom.

Twelve years ago, Yasmina Blackburn said, American Girl turned down her request for a Muslim doll so that she could show her then-8-year-old daughter she was represented.

But now the company has started selling an outfit for the holiday Eid. It happened after Blackburn reached out again last year. This time, she said, she was not only told yes — she was consulted on the project.

“They trusted me to give the feedback, and they really listened to it,” Blackburn said Thursday. “They really cared that they would represent things correctly.”

She said this is a sign of the times in which corporate America is working to be inclusive.
