(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly 40 dogs and cats have arrived from animal shelters in Louisiana, officials at PAWS Chicago announced Wednesday.

The animal welfare organization sent a van this week to collect the 38 cats, dogs, kittens and puppies and bring them back to Chicago. The idea is to free up shelter space in Louisiana to make space for new animals displaced by Hurricane Ida.

The animals sent to Chicago are undergoing intake and getting medical attention and eventually will be available for adoption. PAWS Chicago is looking for people who can foster the animals as they recover from any medical issues.
